:: Distance Learning Certificate Programs FAQ

Q: What are PETEX Distance Learning Certificate Programs?

A: PETEX Distance Learning Certificate Programs are self-study packages designed for learners who wish to gain a better understanding of the oil and gas industry but prefer the flexibility and convenience of working at their own pace. Each program that we offer includes an assessment component to gauge retention and help ensure comprehension of the material. Upon successful completion of a Distance Learning Program, a Completion Certificate is awarded from The University of Texas at Austin-PETEX along with Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Q: What sorts of topics do the programs address?

A: Current topics include petroleum fundamentals, production basics, well control, drilling, geology, and land and leasing. We are constantly expanding our offerings to meet the growing needs of our customers and to address industry trends. Check our Web site often to see what’s new!

Q: Are the programs available in different formats?

A: We offer publication-based, e-learning-based, and video-based programs. The publication- and video-based programs examine various processes, tools, equipment, and regulations in a way that is clear and easy to understand. The e-learning-based programs comprise several interactive learning modules that address a number of pertinent, industry-related topics.

Q: What is the assessment component of the programs like?

A: Each program includes a collection of quiz or test items based on the material that is covered in the publication, e-learning modules, or video.

When you purchase a publication- or video-based program, an online assessment is made available to you on your computer through the Internet. You may reference the publication or video as you test your understanding of the material. During the licensing period, you may work on individual sections of the assessment gradually. Be sure to save often, however, to avoid losing your work.

For our e-learning based programs, quiz items are built into the modules.

Q: How do I receive the program I purchase?

A: Log-in information for the electronic pieces of the program will be sent to the email address that you provide at the time of purchase. Any piece of the program that we deliver over the Internet is accessed on a secure Web site.

When you purchase a publication- or video-based program, the book or DVD will be shipped to the address you provided.

Q: What is the format of the questions in the assessment component?

A: The majority of the questions are multiple choice and matching.

Q: How do I successfully complete a program?

A: You must earn an overall score of 70% on the assessment component to earn your Completion Certificate and CEUs.

Q: What happens if I fail a program?

A: One retake opportunity is made available if your overall score on the assessment component is below 70%.

Q: What are Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?

A: CEUs are points that PETEX awards when you successfully complete a program. The number of CEUs awarded depends on the amount and complexity of the material that is addressed in the publications, e-learning modules, or videos. Many organizations require that their members attain CEUs throughout the year in order to maintain professional licenses.

Q: How do I receive my certificate and CEUs?

A: Upon successful completion of the program’s assessment component, you will be prompted to print a Completion Certificate. CEUs will be awarded electronically at the same time and reflected on your certificate.

Q: How long do I have to complete a program before it expires?

A: The amount of time we allot varies from program to program. Please refer to the PETEX Web site or catalog to review the license agreement for the program(s) you wish to purchase.

Q: Can a program be used to train larger groups?

A: Yes. If you have a larger group that requires licenses for multiple users, please contact us directly about registration and volume discounts.
