Dean Judy Ashcroft offers a look at the future of continuing education, Part One

6/9/2010

Dr. Judy C. Ashcroft serves as dean of Continuing & Innovative Education (CIE) at The University of Texas at Austin. In this role, she oversees all the programs and initiatives of the components that make up the division: the K-16 Education Center, the Petroleum Extension Service (PETEX), Professional Development Center, Thompson Conference Center, University Extension, and the University of Texas-University Charter School. This year, Dr. Ashcroft adds another title to her long list of credentials: president of the national University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) for 2010-2011.

When asked why she has made a career in continuing education, she replies: “I get to see the difference it makes [in people’s lives]. I get to work with people who have self-selected continuing education because [earning] corporate shares isn’t what they want. What they want in life is to make a difference…I believe education has the power to change lives for the better.”

In the video above, Dr. Ashcroft offers an answer to the question, “What do you believe is the future of continuing education?” The video provides only part of her answer. Look to this blog for part 2 of this video in which Dr. Ashcroft discusses the importance of online learning and the needs filled by continuing education in our community and world.
