UPDATED 03/30/12: CIE Embraces New Vision as Linda Glessner named Executive Director

On October 28, 2011, Linda L. Glessner, PhD, assumed the role of Executive Director for the Division of Continuing and Innovative Education (CIE). In this position Linda provides leadership to all CIE units and departments as the division embraces a new vision and structure that more fully reflects and enhances the mission of The University of Texas at Austin. That vision includes a more refined strategy to reach even more non-traditional students, including high school and adult learners.

“The landscape of nontraditional students has changed and, by refocusing CIE, we can better support the University’s mission to serve both domestic and global audiences and assist our community in meeting its most pressing training needs,” said Linda. “CIE’s integrated foundation of services and educational programs also allows us to advise campus leaders on the most effective ways to address critical priorities for their students. It is an exciting time for us, and we look to the future with great enthusiasm and anticipation.”

Just one example of how CIE will enable the University to reach more global audiences is by working in conjunction with the College of Fine Arts to offer courses and innovative programs at Casa Herrera in Antigua, Guatemala. Casa Herrera is a teaching and research center owned by the University. CIE is currently planning on offering professional development opportunities at Casa Herrera to Guatemalan professionals, in addition to offering travel opportunities and cultural exchanges to adult learners from Texas. Many more international learning opportunities are being planned as part of CIE’s ongoing vision.

Linda’s new appointment comes from Steven Leslie, provost of the University. “I am delighted that Dr. Glessner has agreed to serve as executive director,” said Leslie. “Linda already has built strong partnerships with academic leaders on our campus, and I look forward to working with her as we take our next steps with educational program development nationally and internationally.”

Linda brings more than 20 years of corporate experience in product development, public outreach, strategic marketing, organizational planning and leadership development to her new role at CIE. In her career, she has been an accomplished adviser to industry, public schools, nonprofit volunteer organizations and higher education as an administrator and visiting faculty member. Linda also has extensive knowledge in the creation of self-sustaining continuing and professional education enterprises in both national and global settings.

As a result of her professional achievements, Linda has received several nominations and appointments. A small sample of these achievements includes:

  • Ambassador-elect, Points of Light Foundation, The White House
  • Ambassador, San Antonio Rotary Club to France
  • Chair, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce – Forward San Antonio III
  • Chair, Futures & Markets Commission, University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA)
  • Chair, University of Texas Academic Deans Issues Forum
Linda earned her PhD in Organizational Behavior from Texas A&M University, after earning a Masters of Arts in Educational Administration from The University of Texas at San Antonio. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education/Public Health Administration from Kansas State University.
