On Wednesday, November 3, CIE hosted, in collaboration with Gift and Estate Planning, the latest in its “CIE Presents” series: “Smart Planning for Smart Women: Protecting Yourself, Your Family, Your Assets.” This hour-long session provided an update to topics addressed in “Smart Planning for Smart Women” seminars hosted in 2009 and 2010. Speakers Rhonda Brink and Brooke Hardie, both Attorneys at Law and Board Certified in Estate Planning, led the discussion that included a look at the top estate planning mistakes and a question and answer session. The Thompson Conference Center hosted a near capacity crowd for this free CIE event.
- The video capture of the session is no longer available due to changes in tax law.
- The event handout is no longer available due to changes in tax law.
After a welcome from Dean Judy Ashcroft, Rhonda and Brooke started right away in explaining the great importance of planning for and creating a will. Rhonda illustrated her beliefs about how thorough your planning should be by quoting the movie “Amadeus,” the story of Mozart and his envious mentor Salieri. In the film, Mozart plays a new symphony for the Austrian king who retorts, “Too many notes.” Rhonda said she’d rather a document have “too many words” if that’s what is required to get your will or trust just right.
The handout above provides a great overview of the topics presented and many of the discussion points, such as:
- Understanding the difference between “writing a will” and “estate planning.”
- The duties of an Executor.
- The advantages and disadvantages of a Living Trust.
- The impact of changing personal relationships on estate planning.
