CIE honors long-term and outstanding team members at 2013 Service Awards
4/30/2013On April 23, members of CIE and special guests gathered at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center for a special luncheon to recognize seven of our own staff members who have earned 2013 Staff Service Awards and one who was chosen as an Outstanding Staff member at The University of Texas at Austin.
The university initiated the Staff Service Awards to honor employees who have worked for 10 or more years at the university. The first award is made at 10 years, with subsequent awards being given at 5-year intervals. At CIE's celebration, each award recipient walked CIE's own “red carpet” to accept a framed award certificate and special Longhorn lapel pin signifying their years of service at the university. Jeff Treichel, executive director, ad interim, presented the awards and introduced each recipient’s supervisor who then spoke of their own favorite memories of working with their Service Award recipient.

CIE also honored an essential member of our team who was selected by the office of President Bill Powers to be counted among the university’s Outstanding Staff members: Elisabel Bordallo of the Thompson Conference Center (TCC). Only thirty outstanding staff members from across the entire university were recognized this year.
Elisabel Bordallo is responsible for leading conference services at the Thompson Conference Center (TCC). In her role, she acts as a point of contact at TCC for several campus groups who come to the center month after month, year after year to hold classes and meetings. Since coming to TCC four years ago, Elisabel has been integral to restructuring the center’s operations, integrating new continuing education programming and growing the conferencing services.
“TCC has hundreds of classes in continuing education each year, in addition to hosting events for external and government groups. This programming brings people from campus, the greater Austin area, other cities in Texas, other states, and other countries to TCC, all on a routine basis,” says Bailey Dermanci, administrative associate at TCC and one of Elisabel’s direct reports. “Elisabel treats each client as the highest priority, whether a university professor speaking for Informal Classes or members of a conference from Washington D.C.”
Before TCC went through a formal reorganization in 2009, the conference center operated at about 10% capacity or less in evening and weekends. However, with the addition of new programs, such as Informal Classes, TCC now operates at 80-90% capacity and is routinely open nearly 90 hours a week. Elisabel is responsible for managing staff to ensure coverage of those operations.
“I can’t count the number of thank you notes she and the conference office receive from clients based on her work and personal touch,” says Pat Watson, director of the TCC and Elisabel's supervisor. “When more clients then not thank us for their experience, that’s a testament to the service provided by Elisabel and her team.”
“I believe Elisabel is a large part of the reason we are such a successful office,” adds Bailey. “She has chosen the right people to work here and has encouraged us to work together. She is an advocate on our behalf and we respect her and the decisions that she makes regarding our work. I do not think one could ask for a better supervisor.”
Congratulations to Elisabel and all of our 2012 award recipients!
