UEX student Mirian Uroza invests in education and in her future
11/14/2010“I love to learn,” says Mirian Uroza, a student finishing up her Business Foundations Certificate with University Extension (UEX). “I don’t want to ever stop learning. I try to learn something new every day. I love it and it keeps me motivated.”
Mirian’s motivation and enthusiasm for learning are very high as she takes a bus from Katy, Texas, to Austin every week to attend her evening class, "Foundations of Entrepreneurship," on The University of Texas at Austin campus. She then spends the night at a friend’s house and returns to Katy the next day.
With only a few weeks left in the semester, we sat down with Mirian to find out about her experiences with the class.
Why are you taking the entrepreneurship course with UEX?
“I’m earning the Business Foundations Certificate. This is one of my last two classes, but it’s been my favorite. The instructor, Gary Hoover, is very inspiring. I think of him as both a philosopher and a businessman. Hearing his experiences as an entrepreneur has been wonderful. He impresses upon us to believe in ourselves. And if you like what you are doing, you will be successful.”
Where are you from? What brought you to Texas?
“I’m from Venezuela. I came here with my husband and my son. We relocated to Austin, so my husband could pursue his PhD in Geology here at the university. I’ve been exposed to the environment of the university and I really love it. I want my son to go here, too. After my husband finished his studies, we moved to Katy because he got a job in Houston.”
Tell us about taking the bus from Katy every week to attend this evening class.
"Every week, on Wednesday, I take the bus from Katy at 10:55 a.m. and I arrive in Austin at 2 p.m. My class is from 6 to 9 p.m. so until my class starts, I read, prepare for class, and talk to friends. After class, I go to a friend’s house, spend the night, and then take the bus back to Katy the next day. Sometimes it’s hard, but I enjoy the class and I want to earn this certificate."
What are your goals?
"In the short term, I want to finish the classes for my certificate. Then I want to earn a Masters in Business, get a good job, and ultimately have my own business."
What keeps you motivated?
"I believe that the higher your motivation, the greater your success. You have to work hard, to put your heart and energy and creativity into your work to be successful. I truly believe that the best investment you can make for personal success is education. The best thing you can do is invest in education. It gives you opportunities to be self-confident, more knowledgeable, and better prepared in your career and life. I think it’s wonderful to have so many opportunities, like this class, available at such a great institution as UT Austin."
