:: Part 48 New Miner Training

The Part 48(b) New Miner Training (NMT) is offered as a public course each month.  MSHA Subpart B New Miner Training is for individuals working at surface mines or surface areas of underground mines. The New Miner Training course is instructed by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved instructors and all course material meets the standards set forth by MSHA.  Total course length is 24 hours and is organized into three, eight-hour days.  The traditional Part 48 New Miner Training course consists of twenty (20) hours of New Miner Training topics and a four (4) hour First Aid/CPR certification course.

To qualify for enrollment in a Part 48 NMT you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Newly employed inexperienced miner.
  • Contractor needing to conduct work at a mine site.
  • Small mine with fewer than 3 employees that need NMT.

Please note that if you are interested in becoming a MSHA Approved Instructor, it is a prerequisite to complete New Miner Training prior to applying for the MSHA Part 48 Instructor Certification.

NMT Checklist:

  • Bring your hardhat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots and high visibility vest as a portion of the course may require a visit to a local mine site.
