Instructor Training Course

The 3.5 day ITC classes are $695.00 per participant and are held at The University of Texas at Austin’s Pickle Research Campus (unless otherwise noted below) from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Send your mine’s best communicator to become a certified trainer. Participants who successfully complete the Instructor Training Course and are accepted by MSHA will be certified MSHA instructors and can conduct your on-site training. Prerequisites Checklist

Students applying for MSHA Certification must have completed:

  • New Miner Training before applying for the MSHA Part 48 Instructor Certification
  • the Instructor Certification application form
  • a resume reflecting what was written on the application with contact information for experience and training given or received
  • At least two years verifiable mining experience (experience physically working in a mine)
  • Teaching Experience
  • Safety and Health background (safety coordinator, safety manager, or safety assistant or representative), or OSHA Training background (OSHA 500 or 501, background in trenching and excavation and construction)
  • a MIIN (Miner Individual Identification Number)

    • It is preferred that you send us your application and resume prior to registering for the course. We will review your documents to ensure that you meet all the criteria to become an approved MSHA instructor. Send application and resume to: tmshp@austin.utexas.edu.

    Courses must have at minimum four participants and maximum ten participants. If the course drops below the minimum number of participants, the course will be canceled. If canceled, registrants will be notified 10 days prior to the course start date.
