Part 48 New Miner Training
The Part 48 New Miner Training (NMT) is offered as a public course on a quarterly basis. The New Miner Training course is instructed by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved instructors and all course material meets the standards set forth by MSHA. Total course length is 24 hours, and is organized into three days. The traditional Part 48 New Miner Training course consists of twenty (20) hours of New Miner Training topics and a four (4) hour First Aid/CPR course. The Texas Mine Safety and Health Program will need a copy of your MSHA training plan. Please submit this to us via email at tmshp@austin.utexas.edu or via fax at 512-232-2242. To qualify for enrollment in a Part 48 NMT you must meet one of the following criteria:
- New employee in the mining industry.
- Contractor needing to conduct work at a mine site.
- Employee or Contractor instructed to take a Part 48 24-hour NMT before entering a mine.
- Small mine with six employees or less that needs a NMT.
The Texas Mine Safety and Health Program will conduct the Part 48 New Miner Training on a quarterly basis. Classes are all three days long, and each NMT course will be held the week before the scheduled Instructor Training Course (ITC). Please note it is a prerequisite to complete a New Miner Training prior to applying for the MSHA Part 48 Instructor Certification.
