History

University of Texas-University Charter School (UT-UCS) was created to provide a personalized learning experience for K-12 students in need of alternative educational programs.

The school opened in 1998 with one campus and 50 students and has grown to fifteen special purpose campuses across the state serving an average enrollment of 725 students. Because of the special nature of the charter school, there is a high student mobility rate resulting in over 2,000 students being served throughout the school year. Each campus is located on and provided classroom and office space by its facility partner. UT-UCS operates in a variety of settings, including:

  • residential treatment centers,
  • psychiatric hospitals,
  • a residential home for children who, for a variety of reasons cannot live at home,
  • therapeutic wilderness camps,
  • a shelter housing families escaping domestic violence,
  • a home for girls in crisis pregnancies,
  • a medical facility for children who require specialized services due to brain injury or neuro-behavioral issues and/or who are considered medically fragile, and
  • two elite gymnastic programs.
