Award Winning UT Professor to Teach for UEX

Ann Repp, an award winning faculty member in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin, will teach PSY 304 - Introduction to Child Psychology for University Extension (UEX) in the Spring 2011 semester. Professor Repp earned her doctorate in Developmental Psychology from UT Austin. She credits her many teaching awards to her love of teaching and enthusiasm for her area of study. Most recently, Professor Repp was awarded the Harry Ransom Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009, an award that is given annually to one faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts.

In the interview below, Professor Repp discusses her experiences teaching for UEX.

Why do you think this course is valuable?

This course presents a general view of the field of developmental psychology for those simply seeking basic knowledge about different areas of psychology.

It also provides information and insights to students that they can apply to their lives. The course provides particular insights into child behavior for those working with children and for parents. It can also give students an understanding of their own psychological history.

What do you like most about your UEX students?

The range of backgrounds—some are young, typically college-aged students; but, others are older, perhaps retraining for new careers. The small class size also means that students feel freer to voice their thoughts.

What is your favorite lesson or activity to share with your UEX students?

The importance of the attachment relationship. This first emotional tie is fun for me to talk about for a variety of reasons:

  • Because of its pervasiveness across many species.
  • Because of the “wired-in” nature of the behaviors that support the development of this relationship.
  • Because of the foundation that it provides for future relationships.

What do you think particularly sticks with your students after taking your course?

The videos that I show to support the course’s conceptual material. I have a large video library that includes some priceless moments.

Registration is open for Professor Repp’s PSY 304 - Introduction to Child Psychology. UEX’s Spring 2011 courses begin on January 24.
