Veni, vidi, vici - Janeka Rector Completes Degree with Self-paced Latin Course

“A university provides a clear purpose: helping people achieve an education. You improve yourself with education—your life, skills and the opportunities available to you. Getting an education is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself.” – Janeka Rector

Janeka Rector is a true Longhorn. Having earned a bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television-Film from The University of Texas at Austin in 2004, she now works full-time in the university’s Development Office. Janeka truly believes in the mission of the university and the benefits of higher education to improve the quality of life, so much so that she recently went back to school to earn a second degree.

At the beginning of 2012, Janeka discovered that she only lacked four elective credit hours to complete the requirements for her new degree from the university. This discovery presented a particular challenge, as the catalog she was following was set to expire at the end of August. If Janeka did not complete the catalog’s degree requirements before the August deadline, she would have to take several additional courses to complete her degree under a new set of course requirements.

After thoroughly researching the available courses in the time she had left, Janeka decided that a self-paced online course from University Extension (UEX) would be her best option. She enrolled in LAT 506 – First-Year Latin I and got to work.

Janeka was able to set her own pace, scheduling her assignment due dates and exam test dates, in order to beat her graduation deadline. In addition, Janeka found the course both challenging and rewarding. It also helped her develop a new appreciation of language usage in her daily life. “Latin is everywhere. Latin phrasing and logic is the basis for how we communicate in English. This class made sense of every previous grammar lesson I’ve had,” she says.

UEX helped Janeka earn the credit she needed on a tight schedule. She explains, “I was able to take my last four hour credits, at my own pace, and finish the course just in time for the Summer Graduation deadline. The best thing was that there was no paperwork involved in making sure that my credits from UEX appeared on my transcript. Now I have a second bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies!”
