UEX Courses Helped Guardsman Graduate

Rodolfo Orellana was serving in the Army National Guard, while also enrolled full-time at The University of Texas at Austin. When his work schedule changed, making it difficult for him to be on campus every day, UEX evening classes provided the solution.

How did you learn about University Extension?

I had heard a rumor that UT had online classes, so I did some research to learn more about them. I talked to my financial aid counselor and departmental counselor to learn more about course options with UEX, and I ended up taking courses in the evenings.

Did you take evening or online courses? What was the benefit of this type of course for you?

I took two UEX evening classes to maintain progress towards completing my degree, while also working full-time for the Guard. It was great! I was able to go the evening classes after I got off work. UEX evening classes were convenient, were taught by some great professors, and were some of the best classes I took at UT.

Were the classes what you expected?

I was surprised at the quality of instruction and satisfied with the knowledge and credentials of the instructors. The small classroom atmosphere was great for learning and for maximum classroom participation. There was a great mix of students from all walks of life, which made topic discussions intriguing, and the instructors really got to know the students.

What was your goal in taking courses with UEX?

I wanted to earn UT credit and maintain my full-time student status while I continued my full-time career in the Army National Guard. This goal was achieved, and I enjoyed the courses I took with UEX. Even though I am a graduate, I would still consider taking some courses just for the fun of it!

What would you say are biggest benefits of taking courses with University Extension?

The best benefit UEX offers is convenience. The classes can fit any working adult’s schedule. If you cannot make the evening classes, then there are also the online classes. Online classes or evening classes make earning credit easy and convenient for military service members. Since we may be activated in the middle of a semester, UEX online courses allow us to continue taking courses, even if our schedules change.

Any advice to someone considering taking a course with University Extension?

Do it! The classes are great, and the instructors really work with you. You can still be a student and work full-time.
