UT Graduate Used UEX Courses to Complete Degree

Jamie Sauer returned to college a few years ago to complete her degree. During her last two years at UT, Jamie took advantage of both evening and online courses with UEX in order to maintain momentum towards completing degree requirements, while caring for her newborn daughter.

Jamie completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Applied Learning and Development this spring and graduated in May.

Check out Jamie’s responses to these questions about her experiences taking courses with UEX.

How did you learn about University Extension?

I stumbled across some information about UEX on UT Direct. Then, I learned more about how UEX classes would apply to my degree plan at UT through my academic advisor.

How did taking courses at University Extension help you to reach your academic goals?

Taking advantage of the courses offered in UEX allowed me to continue my progress towards a degree during a time when I needed my class schedule to be extremely flexible. I was also able to find classes that met a specific need, such as needing one class with a substantial writing component to satisfy a degree requirement at UT.

Did you take evening or online courses? What was the benefit for you?

I took both evening and online courses. The main benefit for each type was that I could find a class that fit my specific scheduling need.

The evening classes allowed me to take a class I needed while my husband was home with our children. The online classes allowed me to get a couple of classes out of the way while taking care of my newborn.

Did you prefer one type of course (classroom or online) to another?

I liked both methods of learning. For the online courses I had to be aware of how I was budgeting the time I spent on studying, assignments and tests. I enjoyed being able to set my own pace in these classes. There were times I was highly motivated to make headway, and was able to get several sections completed over a few days or a week. There were other times when family obligations prohibited me from spending much time on the class for a couple of weeks, or even a month, and that was okay.

What were the classes like?

The classes were quite challenging. I found that online course instructors were easy to get in touch with for questions regarding the material.

What would you say are biggest benefits of taking courses with University Extension?

  1. Convenience and flexibility
  2. Continued momentum towards degree goals
  3. Small class size in the evenings
  4. A variety of courses that can be applied towards UT degree plans, including courses with a substantial writing component

Did the course offerings of University Extension fit your degree requirements easily?

Yes. When I was a student, I looked for UEX courses to compliment my UT coursework each semester. I was always able to find a variety of courses that applied to my degree.

Any advice to someone considering taking a course with University Extension?

For the self-paced courses, I would advise a new UEX student to look at everything they will need to accomplish over the 9 months and write down due date goals for themselves. This will help keep them on-track.
