Student Is Finalist in Contest to Honor Nation’s Veterans

University Extension (UEX) student Shannon Mugrage is a busy guy. He and his wife are adopting a 2-year-old girl, who is the light of his life. He is taking courses to complete a bachelor’s degree while working full-time, and last year, Shannon put his life on hold to donate bone marrow to a 12-year-old boy he’d never met.

It’s no wonder, then, that Shannon was recently named as a finalist in “People” magazine and Major League Baseball’s “Tribute For Heroes” campaign, honoring the nation’s veterans and military service members. Shannon is one of three veterans representing the Houston Astros, and if he wins for the Astros, he will be recognized during the All-Star pre-game ceremony on July 16th.

The “Tribute for Heroes” campaign supports Welcome Back Veterans, a program that addresses the needs of veterans after they return from service. Shannon served for seven years with a deployment to the Persian Gulf on USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom. He also served two temporary assignments in Bahrain in support of Mine Sweeper Fleets. He received numerous medals, including two Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Shannon is using education benefits provided by the Post-9/11 GI Bill to complete a bachelor’s degree and prepare for his next career. Shannon was taking courses at The University of Texas at Austin, before taking time off to donate bone marrow. His original plan was to pursue a degree in electrical engineering, but after a particularly inspiring government course, he is now considering a career in law.

Since he hasn’t had time to attend classes on campus as a full-time student, Shannon has maintained progress on his degree requirements by taking self-paced online courses with UEX. He appreciates that the self-paced course format gives him the flexibility to study in his free time, like when his daughter is napping.

In addition to completing HIS 315L - United States Since 1865, a core curriculum course, he is taking LEB 320F - Foundations of the Legal Environment of Business to learn more about the legal industry.
