UEX Online Classes Helped UT Student Stay On Track While Abroad

Nadia Mhatey is a senior in the College of Education. During her junior year, she had to leave UT and the U.S. for six months because of family obligations. With online courses offered by University Extension (UEX), Nadia was able to continue her academic progress while she was out of the country.

University Extension Profile Questions

How did taking courses at University Extension help you to reach your academic goals?

Taking courses with University Extension helped me not only to reach my academic goals, but to reach them in a manner more flexible and suited to my schedule than if I had taken those same classes on campus. I entered my last year at UT realizing I still had some classes here and there which I needed to take as part of my degree requirements. I was able to sign up for courses with University Extension and work on them in my spare time while I was traveling.

Did you take evening or online courses? What was the benefit for you?

I took online courses. The benefits included the ability to progress in the course at my own pace, while keeping in contact with my instructor through the online message board.

What classes did you take?

I took E316K: British Literature and M316L: Foundations of Geometry.

What were the classes like? Were they what you expected?

The classes were pretty much as I expected. There was a series of 12-13 assignments to be completed and submitted online, plus proctored exams that I was able to take at the University of Mumbai, which was close to where I was staying in India.

What would you say is the biggest benefit of taking courses with University Extension?

Flexibility; managing your own time and working at your own pace.

Any advice to someone considering taking a course with University Extension?

I would recommend giving yourself plenty of time to finish the course. And also expect to apply the same effort usually put into a classroom course. Being online or in the evening, the UEX classes are very flexible as far as scheduling, however the amount of work is the same, so it would be a mistake to underestimate that.
