Focus on the music and lives of Barber, Menotti, Bernstein, and Copland. Through recordings, video presentations and discussion learn how the composers lives, careers and music making intertwined.

Trace the evolution of the art song while examining three songs from different periods of music history: Purcell's Dido's Lament (Baroque), Schubert's Erlkonig ( Romantic) and Britten's Dirge (Early Modern).

Survey, first-hand, the encyclopedic art collections of Houston: Museum of Fine Arts, Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel, Twombly Gallery, Dan Flavin Installation, Contemporary Arts Museum.

Houston Symphony performance: Xian Zhang, conductor; Helene Grimaud, piano; Ravel: La Valse; Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4; Bernstein: Three Dance episodes from On the Town; Falla: Suite from The Three-Cornered Hat. Program includes one morning session “Great Conductors Performing Great Composers”. Examine the conducting styles and temperaments of the great conductors. Hear music by Beethoven and others; discuss the musical interpretations by various conductors: Toscanini, Solti, Bernstein.
