Resources for Users with Disabilities

The Division of Continuing & Extended Education is committed to designing accessible Web sites. As part of our service to users with disabilities, this help section explains our site navigation, access keys, information architecture, and site design in order to assist you with locating the information you need.

If you need more assistance, please e-mail the webmaster or contact Continuing & Extended Education by phone at (512) 471-4652. Additionally, each page contains a link to UT accessibility in the footer navigation information.

Site Navigation

The Continuing & Extended Education Web site’s links are organized by an image map, two main vertical bars, and one horizontal bar. These bars are persistent throughout the site occuring on every page. The following three points help explain the navigation system utilized through this site.

  1. On the left and to the right of the top vertical bar is the University of Texas at Austin logo and the Continuing and Extended Education logo. Both of these logos are joined in an image map, and each logo is a clickable image. The University of Texas at Austin logo takes you back to the University of Texas at Austin, while the Continuing and Extended Education logo takes you back to the Continuing and Extended Education Home page.

The first right vertical bar contains pure text links, which link to the most important site-wide functions of the Continuing & Extended Education site. From left to right, links exist for home, site-map, contact us, contact webmaster, and help.

  2. The second vertical bar, located immediately under the first vertical bar, contains all the links for what we offer at Continuing & Extended Education. Reading from left to right, links exist for certificate programs, college credit, international study, k-12 courses and programs, personal enrichment, professional development, and other services.

  3. The third bar, located immediately below the second vertical bar, is a horizontal left bar running from top to bottom. This horizontal bar contains links for Continuing & Extended Education’s Administrative Units. Links exist for the Distance Education Center, Petroleum Extension Service, Photography Services, Professional Development Center, Thompson Conference Center, Third Age University, University Extension, and the Office of the Dean.

Access Keys

To assist visually impaired users with quick keyboard navigation, the main site-wide navigation links in the first vertical navigation bar have access keys. For the image map, University of Texas at Austin is access key 2, and Continuing and Extended Education is access key 3. For the vertical bar link list, home is assigned 4, site map to 5, contact us to 6, contact webmaster to 7, and help to 8.

Users accessing the Web through a screen reader can skip all navigation links and go to the site's main content through access key 1.

Information Architecture

The site’s content is organized by headings, which indicate the important sections within each page. Content hierarchy is represented through different heading levels. Images that accompany content all contain alternative text and where relevant, captions.

Users accessing the Web through a screen reader can use a link to skip over all of the site's navigational links to get to the page's main content.
