TXMSHP offers a variety of training opportunities

Fee Increase
Effective October 1, 2006, the fee for grant subsidized training, including Annual Refresher, New Miner, First Aid/CPR/AED, and Supervisory Training, will be increased from $30 per hour to $50 per hour for Monday through Friday training. Training requests for Saturdays will be accommodated at $75 per hour when available. Part 48 Instructor Certification Training will increase to $600 per student. Our minimum and maximum students per class will not change. We have maintained the same price for the past several years and since there has been a tremendous increase in training over the past years, this pricing change will ensure that the program funds will be enough to accommodate the training needs of the Texas’ mining community.

The Texas Mine Safety and Health Program appreciates your understanding and consideration on this matter.

Instructor Training Courses (ITC)

This is the Part 48 MSHA Certified Instructor Training Course. This course is ideal for your company's safety director, manager, or operator that would like to conduct your own training in house.  The certification is a requirement for those operations that fall under the Title 30 CFR Part 48 for underground and/or coal operations or contractors that work in these operations.

This course is also widely sought by individuals working in or with Title 30 CFR Part 46 Surface metal and nonmetal facilities.  Although this certification is not a requirement for these facilities, many individuals take it to familiarize themselves with the different teaching methods, familiarize themselves with the MSHA paperwork, networking with other participants, and to get additional resources for future concerns and training material.

The application process consist of successful completion of the Instructor Training Course and formal acceptance from MSHA.

Annual Refresher training Part 46 or Part 48 available

The Annual Refresher training (ART) is normally conducted on site and scheduled when you call in to request it.  The training consist of 8-hours of training for those miners that have been trained within the past 12 months.
Please allow at least 3 weeks lead time before you are due for your training.  Scheduling will be done on a first come first served basis so try to schedule your training needs as far in advance as possible.  Before calling to schedule a training making sure to have the following items will make the process go smoothly:

-At least 7 students but not more than 25 per training day, in order for us to appropriately administer the grant funding we will need to adhere to this requirement.  If your facility does not have 7 people in total do not hesitate to contact us, we will try to make every effort to try to combine your training with a similar facility in your area to meet the minimum requirement.  If your facility has 7 or more people we will need at least 7 people for the training.  The trainers have enough material for 25 students, if you have more than 25 students they will not have enough material to perform the class. Please limit your classes to a maximum of 25 students.

-Training Plan with "The University of Texas" listed as a competent trainer for the subjects needing (not including anything related to site specific training or changes at the mine).  Part 48 facilities will need to have the training plan approved by MSHA before the training can be conducted.  The University of Texas Mine Safety and Health Program (TXMSHP) will require a copy of the training plan to keep on file for auditing purposes and to ensure that your are receiving the proper training.

-Adequate room/space for the amount of miners you need trained. Students learn best when they are learning in a comfortable environment. If your site does not have the room to do the training, please feel free to reserve a room at a nearby hotel, church, chamber of commerce, hall, fire station, restaurant or etc.

If you want an excellent presentation on the requirements of Part 46, the NSSGA has a great presentation here.

New Miner training  Part 46 or Part 48 available

The New Miner training (NMT) like the ART is normally conducted on site or at a location chosen by the person requiring the training. The same requirements as above will apply to the NMT.

The difference between an ART and a NMT is that the NMT is more in depth training with a broader explanation for those people that are brand new to the mining industry. The ART's are a little faster pace and common terminology is used to a larger scale with the understanding that the students already have received some training in the past. These classes are different and if mixed with new miners and experienced miners one or the other would be completely lost or lose focus and render the training of little use to them. Please do not ask us to mix the training classes.

First Aid/CPR training

Our 8-hour First Aid training with an introduction to CPR course is approved to meet the MSHA requirement of having someone trained on each shift that is certified. When the student successfully accomplishes all the requirements for the course, the TXMSHP will issue a First Aid/CPR certification card that is good for 3 years.  This 3-year period is under the condition that the person certified will receive as required per MSHA some form of First Aid refresher training each year.

The TXMSHP offers both the 8-hour First Aid/CPR course and the First Aid/CPR refresher course.  The refresher course is offered as part of the 8-hour ART and can be for any amount of time with in the 8 hours as long as you have it on your training plan.

The class limitations are a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 15 students per each 8-hour First Aid/CPR course.  For the refresher First Aid/CPR the same requirements as stated in the ART section would apply.
