Liberal Arts and University Extension Professor Receives Top Honor

April 23, 2008

Wayne Lesser, associate professor in the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin has been selected to receive the 2008 Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award. This award, which includes a $4,000 prize, was established in 1996 to recognize and honor outstanding individual advisors in the university’s Graduate School. The award will be presented to Dr. Lesser during the Graduate Convocation ceremony on May 17, 2008.

Lesser has been a professor in the university’s Department of English since 1975, the same year he earned his PhD in English from the University of Chicago. He previously received a Master of Arts in English at the University of Chicago in 1972 and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. In addition to his current duties in the university’s Department of English, Lesser also teaches several online and classroom courses for University Extension (UEX), a component of the Division of Continuing and Innovative Education at The University of Texas at Austin.

“I am delighted that Professor Lesser’s efforts are being recognized,” says Jo Anne Shea, associate dean of Continuing Education and director of University Extension. “I am doubly delighted to offer such a high-caliber educator and administrator to our continuing education students. This award is just the latest indication of the excellent educational resources and opportunities found in UEX.”
Recipients of the Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award are recognized for meeting a list of criteria that benefit the professional and academic development of graduate students. These criteria include a recipient’s ability to recruit and retain high-quality graduate students, availability and sensitivity to student needs, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other faculty and administrators on graduate education matters. Students, faculty and administrative peers are invited to nominate candidates for this award through the Graduate School.

University Extension (UEX) offers classroom and online college credit courses from the university’s course inventory, as well as many special academic and enrichment programs. UEX is designed to benefit students in the state of Texas and around the world.
