NOTE: PLEASE CREDIT LATINO USA WHEN USING THE MODULES. SEGMENT #1 Latinos are by far the fastest growing part of the Catholic faithful in the United States. During his recent visit, Pope John Paul the Second called on all Las Americas, South and North, to observe December 12th as El Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe, the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Pontiff's remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of Hispanics to the Catholic Church both in number of followers and as spiritual leaders. Church leaders agree that more Latino priests are needed and Latino USA's Ingrid Lobet reports on some creative efforts at recruitment. (5:37) SEGMENT #2 Latino USA producer Maria Martin speaks with Dr. David Hayes Bautista, Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health, about the consequences for Latinos of the Supreme Court's decision not to allow statistical sampling in the next census. (4:52 SELF-CONTAINED) SEGMENT #3 In Latino communities all over the country, a hybrid language which uses English and Spanish is a popular form of communication. Span-glish, as its commonly referred to, was first created by immigrants who were trying to learn English. Today, Spanglish is part of everyday conversation for many. But it's not without controversy. From Cleveland, WCPN's Yolanda Perdomo reports on how some young people use it. And how academics caution against the melding of two established languages. (5:06) SEGMENT #4 The mixing of cultures and languages made story-teller Carmen Agra Deedy remember a particular moment with her Cuban-born mother in this commentary entitled "The Trouble with Windows." BACKANNOUNCE: Storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy lives and writes about her Cuban experience from Tucker, Georgia.
