NOTE: PLEASE CREDIT LATINO USA WHEN USING THE MODULES. SEGMENT #1 The Immigration and Naturalization Service has begun a new program aimed at reducing the numbers of undocumented workers. Under the recently adopted strategy, the immigration service is foregoing raids and deportations. Instead, the agency is auditing personnel records across entire industries, then pressuring business owners to fire undocumented workers. The INS hopes that by removing employment opportunities, undocumented workers will have no option but to stay home. Gerry Hadden reports from the Yakima valley in the state of Washington. (7:36) SEGMENT #2 In Nebraska, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service began late last year a program called Operation Vanguard aimed at removing undocumented workers from the meat-packing industry. The program is a departure from previous efforts that enforced immigration laws with raids, one plant at a time. Keith Ludden of Nebraska Public Radio has our report. (5:42) SEGMENT #3 As we near the end of this century. Sometimes we unexpectedly hear an echo from its beginning. And as writer Katie Davis tells us the refrain resonates most strongly in the imagination. Backannounce: Latino USA editor Katie Davis is a writer living in Washington, D.C.
