NOTE: PLEASE CREDIT LATINO USA WHEN USING THE MODULES. SEGMENT #1 They were in prison for so long, that to many Puerto Ricans, they were simply called, the prisoners -los prisioneros. On August 11th, President Bill Clinton offered executive clemency to Puerto Rican independentista activists serving sentences in U.S. prisons. They were members of the "Armed Forces for National Liberation" or the FALN and "El Ejercito Popular Boricua" also known as "Los Macheteros." Convicted of "seditious conspiracy," most of the prisoners have served 19 years of their original sentences which varied from 35 to 105 years. The clemency offer imposes certain restrictions. Each prisoner must renounce violence and accept limitations on who they can associate with and where they can travel to. Although these conditions have been called, by critics of the clemency offer, humiliating and unacceptable. Twelve of the jailed Puerto Rican nationalists agreed to accept clemency. From WBEZ in Chicago, Edie Rubinowitz reports. (2:22) SEGMENT #2 For the 12 Independentistas, the 16-19 years they've spent in federal prisons, far from relatives, was finally enough. Their parents are growing old, and members of the community they went to prison fighting for asked them to accept President Clinton's offer of conditional clemency. Latino USA's Ingrid Lobet reports on the activists future plans and the debate over their release which has been every bit as emotional as the fight over Puerto Rico's status. (6:04) SEGMENT #3 Weather forecasters are predicting a busier than normal hurricane season for 1999, but in Central America, they are still dealing with the damage done by last yearšs most destructive hurricane Mitch. Last spring, thousands of U.S. Reserve and National Guard forces were sent to the disaster areas in Central America and the Caribbean -- to help in the rebuilding. This month, they're finally winding up their efforts and returning home. Latino USAšs Maria Martin has this report. (3:52) SEGMENT #4 Latino USA host Maria Hinojosa speaks with country singer Ned Sublette about his debut CD entitled "Cowboy Rumba."
