NOTE: PLEASE CREDIT LATINO USA WHEN USING THE MODULES. SEGMENT #1 In Mexico, ever since people can remember, the candidate for president was chosen by the previous president and the political elite. The process was called "El Dedazo" - referring to the powerful hand of the ruling president who would point to his successor. And because of the ruling party's 70 year hold on power, the PRI's candidate always became the president. This year the process has changed. For the first time an actual primary election was held within the ruling party. Latino USA's Franc Contreras reports that the winner was Francisco Labastida, who will represent the PRI in next year's presidential election. (3:02) SEGMENT #2 Voters in Guatemala are scheduled to return to the polls December 26th, after no presidential candidate received a majority of the votes this past November 7th. These are the first presidential elections in that country in peacetime ‹the first since the 1996 Peace Accords ended a bloody 36 year long civil war. They mark only one challenge in the difficult process of creating a democratic Guatemala. In our next report, Maria Martin looks at a project sponsored by The University of Texas which is also trying to assist that country on the road to democracy ‹by involving Guatemala¹s young people in the legislative process. (6:34) SEGMENT #3 Maria Martin speaks with regular Latino USA host Maria Hinojosa about her new book entitled "Raising Raul: Adventures Raising My Son and My Self." (SELF CONTAINED 5:03) SEGMENT #4 The First Annual Miss Latina Atlantic Coast beauty pageant took place in North Carolina last summer. The winners in the "Teen" and "Miss" categories will go on to the National Miss Latina contest, to be held this November, in Texas. The contest's organizers say they're aware of the traditional trappings of most beauty pageants, but they're using "this" one to foster social change. Leda Hartman prepared this report.
