Ancient Greek Art Lesson
Studio Extension: Art Activity
Required Materials:
Crayons (Red, Orange, Black), Bar of soap
Sharpened wooden skewer sticks, Black, Orange/Red Acrylic or Tempera Paint
Paintbrushes, Pencils
White Paper, Erasers
- Complete steps #1 through #4 in section IV: Studio Production.
- Once the vase has been cut out, the students will decide to make either a black-figure amphora or a red-figure krater. For the bottom crayon layer, students will completely cover the cutout vase in a thick, waxy layer of crayon, either in red/orange or black. After a thick crayon layer has been completed, the students will cover the crayon layer with an opposing layer of black or red/orange paint which has been mixed with a slight amount of soap.
- After the paint has dried, the students will begin to scrape away the paint with various utensils (palette knives, forks, sharpened wooden skewer sticks) to reveal the picture they wish to compose. See step #1 in section IV: Studio Production. Will their picture be about a myth or a real-life story? Note: there will be paint flakes to clean up following this last step in the activity.
