Ancient Greek Art Lesson
Teacher Information
Welcome to the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art!
We are pleased to introduce you and your students to the Museums collection of ancient Greek art via the World Wide Web. The Ancient Greek Art Lesson should be thought of as an extension of the Museum into the classroom. While the lesson can stand alone, it is most beneficial when accompanied with a museum visit. Combining this web-based lesson with a trip to the Blanton will offer your students comprehensive exposure to ancient Greek art, an opportunity to visit the Museum, and time to improve their computer skills. If you are accessing this lesson from outside Central Texas, we encourage you to customize it, and your museum visit, to suit the holdings of your local art museum.
The Ancient Greek Art Lesson provides you with objectives, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) connections, vocabulary, a lesson procedure, discussion suggestions, and art activities for grades 4-6.
- The lesson's Introduction focuses on characteristics of Greek sculpture and vases and the philosophy underlying ancient Greek art.
- The Images and Discussion section presents six ancient Greek artworks including sculpture and vases, a brief background about each object, and suggestions for student discussion.
- Studio Production provides a step-by-step instructional unit on creating a "Greek vase."
- The Studio Extension Lesson offers additional suggestions to build upon the studio activity.
This web-based lesson was created for you. If you have comments or questions regarding its contents, design, or would like additional museum information about curriculum resources and museum/school programs, please e-mail the Blanton Museum Education Office.
