Future Arts Administrators Travel to New York!

Fifteen fine arts students got a taste of life in the Big Apple while also learning about potential careers in Arts Administration over Spring Break as part of the New York Seminar Program. Sponsored by the Texas Exes with collaboration from the Colleges of Fine Arts, Communication and Liberal Arts, the New York Seminar allowed students to interact with professionals through a series of site visits related to a specific career area and a networking reception. This is the first time an Arts Administration option was offered and it was the first NY Seminar to fill all of its spaces! All of the participants said they would recommend the program to another student.

The Arts Administration NY Seminar students visited seven organizations that employ arts administrators in varying capacities with a focus on non–profit agencies. Through visits at Andy Warhol Foundation, Americans for the Arts, 59E59 Theaters, Lincoln Center, Roundabout Theatre Company, IMG Artists, and Creative Capital students learned about different types of arts organizations including their purposes, how they function, and arts administration career opportunities. This program allowed students to get a real world idea of what Arts Administration encompasses. Sarah Williams, a music senior, observed, "Before this seminar I had a very vague understanding of arts administration and what the field entails, but I knew it was definitely something I want to pursue. After our site visits I felt incredibly overwhelmed in the best possible way. I was presented with so many different options in one area that it really motivated me to start thinking about my career and which direction I want to go." Students also learned how arts administrators impact them as performing artists. Art student Moses Tsai said "It [New York Seminar] allowed me to have an alternate view on how I can pursue my career as an artist and into art administration, giving me an understanding of both the art and the business aspects."

For some students, the trip solidified their career goals. Theatre and Dance Senior Nichole Palmietto remarked "My goal after college is to run a professional regional theatre in some capacity. This trip has convinced me to follow that dream. I feel more confident in myself, and I know what I need to learn and what I need to do to be successfully employed." Students received first–hand career advice from the participating professionals on everything from resumes to cover letters to interviews to getting experience. They also learned what they could expect in terms of pay and career options.

The site visits were made possible by the generosity of each of the organizations. Students met with individuals and panels ranging from two to nine people at the organizations, ensuring a wide range of viewpoints. A Texas&ndahs;sized thank you goes out to Fine Arts alums Scott Ferguson and Charlotte Lee who made two of the site visits possible. In response to student and alumni feedback, the program hopes to include visits with individual visual and performing artists in addition to arts administration professionals in the future. As the program grows, FACS is seeking more alumni to meet with students as part of the NY Seminar. Compelled?
