What can I do with a Fine Arts degree?

The real question is "What can't you do with a major in fine arts?" And the answer is simple. Your job options are as wide and varied as your interests and talents. Conversely, the more limited you are, the more limited your choices. Some options may provide less financial stability while others will require you to attend graduate school, but the possibilities are limitless.

When should I use the Career Services office?

You should visit us as soon as you have some career ideas or concerns.

Will FACS find me a job?

No. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee anyone a job. But we can guarantee to provide resources and information that will make your job search much easier. If you do your part (i.e., doing well in a variety of classes, continuing to perfect your artistic talent, interning with organizations of interest to you, taking advantage of campus and community resources, etc.), we can help you become a more competitive candidate.

What kinds of jobs do UT Fine Arts majors find?

First jobs for undergraduate alumni have included: choir and band director, music festival administrator, orchestra member, dancer, actor, artist's assistant, media producer, choreographer, web designer, media producer, publicity assistant, assistant designer, marketing segment specialist, junior designer, graphics editor, visual merchandiser, investor services representative, computer support coordinator, architectural intern, technical support representative, marketing director, gallery assistant, exhibit coordinator, development assistant, library assistant, music teacher, art teacher, theatre teacher, and dance teacher.

Is it possible for those in the arts to get health insurance, retirement plans, and the other benefits typically offered by employers in other sectors?

Yes. The Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center assists those in the arts with finding information on health insurance options nationwide. For actors, dancers, musicians, and visual artists in Texas, the Texas Arts Medicine Center in Houston offers a variety of services, including a monthly free clinic and access to affordable health care. Performers who join the trade union for their profession will have access to health insurance and pension plans through their respective unions. For others, there are many different types of individual retirement savings plans. Check out the U.S. Department of Labor website on savings and retirement plans for more information.

Is it possible to join a union or professional organization while still a student?

Professional organizations are an excellent way to create and maintain networks with other professionals in your field. If you qualify for membership while still a student, you should consider joining such an organization. Most professional organizations encourage student membership, and offer reduced membership rates to students. Typically, one need only be a practicing artist or student in a discipline to join a professional organization. Union membership requirements are much more strict, and it is unlikely that any student who has not worked professionally for the prescribed amount of hours will be able to join a union while still in school. The fees to join a professional union are substantially higher than those to join a professional organization. Many, if not all, arts unions are associated with the AFL-CIO. The AFl-CIO website provides a list of associated unions, with links to their websites.

Does your office provide a credentials service for students applying for graduate school or seeking academic jobs?
