The influence of the Frankfurt School thinkers on musicology and popular music studies has been pervasive. Ethnomusicologists, however, have been more cautious in engaging the key tenets of Critical Theory, often citing its alleged elitism and hostility to popular culture. In this course students will get to know some well known but also lesser known texts that might prompt a different reading of this influential tradition.

Max Horkheimer: The End of Reason
Max Horkheimer/Theodor W.Adorno: The Dialectic of Enlightenment
Theodor W.Adorno: On the Fetish Character in Music
Herbert Marcuse: Eros and Civilization
Theodor W.Adorno: Aesthetic Theory
