music of south africa

The course is an introduction to the black musics of South Africa. The focus is on issues and not so much on providing an exhaustive overview. Students will learn about the traditional roots of the current modern popular styles and explore the role of music in living in (and overcoming the harshness of) a society dominated by divisions of class, race and gender. Most of the material used in class (images, musical examples, videos) is part of a comprehensive Power Point presentation.
