Black Brazilian Brown Bag Series: Gustavo Melo

"Black Theatrical Aesthetic and the (im)possibilities of black performers on stage"

Thursday, March 1st

1:00 - 2:30 pm

GRG 234

The Black Brazilian Brown Bag series features several visiting scholars from Brazil.

This text is proposed as a means to bring into conversation recurrent questions that some black performers, activists, and scholars in Brazil have been concerned with. What is black theater? Does black theater exist? If it does, how can we define it? The reasons for these concerns has to do with some theoretical concepts surrounding art, race, political engagement, and aesthetics. Also, issues related to public policy and scholarly production of knowledge requires the nature of black theatre to be more specific. Besides those factors, in the investigation of black theatrical aesthetics, I am actually concerned about what constitutes our meaning, as black performers, on stage and what are the (im)possibilities that are posed to our practice.
