Sponsored by the Department of English.

Presented by: Dr. Barbara Jones, School of Social Work

Winner: OLUWAKANYINSOLA ("Kanyinsola") OLUWADEMILADE OBAYAN (Double major in International Relations and Global Studies; African and African American Studies), for her paper:
"State Violence, Radical Protest and the black/African Female Body"

Written remarks by Dr. Kevin Thomas (Advertising):

In her work, State Violence, Radical Protest and the black/African Female Body, Kanyinsola does a magnificent job of highlighting inherent contradictions and limitations embedded in western conceptualizations of modernity, while bringing to light the ways in which personal and collective agency are expressed through and by black female bodies. Her analysis is meticulous, exact, and poignant. It is exemplary of the interdisciplinary and intersectional research the Lora Romero Memorial Award seeks to celebrate.
