Three Asian American comedians are among the top ten most viewed personalities on YouTube.  KevJumba (Kevin Wu), Happy Slip (Christine Gambito), and Nigahiga (Ryan Higa) exert a huge presence in a corporatist media system that otherwise limits the exposure of Asian American talent. Beyond the “wow factor” and niggles over their respective personae, “Hypin’ the Hep” will explore how cynical marketing operations are exploiting the Asian American youth demographic by deploying likeable and humorous co-ethnic Judas goats that will lead them to a bad collective end.  The specifics introduced at the talk will illustrate how the once-progressive concepts of “race” and “ethnicity” have been appropriated by the corporatist eugenics complex, weaponized, and finally turned back against Asian Americans in specific.  The conclusions will astound.

Darrell Y. Hamamoto is Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Davis.  His research specialty centers upon media studies and he has authored two books on US network television.  He is committed to non-corporatist controlled expression and toward that end has edited an anthology of essays that promotes Asian American independent media.  His current research interest concerns the recent rise of select Asian Americans to political power and their direct involvement with the promotion of Wall Street-led corporatism, globalist centralized government control, anti-democratic legislation like the PATRIOT Act, and inhuman practices including torture.  A recently-completed manuscript examines this dark side of contemporary Asian American history.
