Signature Course Proposal Information

 APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Application: Faculty members submit proposals* via the UGS Signature Course Proposal online system: https://www.utexas.edu/ugs/sig/propose.  Proposals will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis.
    • *Special Note: Faculty members who have previously taught Signature Courses and wish to repeat their courses will need to submit a proposal using the proposal system.
  • Application Deadline: Friday, October 4, 2013.
  • Notification: UGS will inform department chairs and individual faculty directly regarding decisions on proposals.  The Dean’s Office will periodically notify chairs and senior staff of their department’s submissions and proposal status as we receive the information from UGS.

ENROLLMENTS

  • UGS requests that COLA meet a similar benchmark to past years: 5220 seats for 2014-15.  Ideally these would be found in mostly small-format courses (15-18 students/crs) and very few large-format courses (40+ students/crs).  Variations are allowable as long as we meet the benchmark.
  • Approximately 80% of courses should be scheduled for Fall 2014.  Proposals for Summer 2014 and Spring 2015 will be reviewed/considered on the same timeline.

FUNDING ALLOCATION RULES

  • Signature Course funding will be allocated to academic departments only.
  • For all signature course instructors, funding will default to the department that is providing the faculty member with the course release (in most cases, the primary department).
    • For faculty with split appointments, funding will default to the department that is providing the faculty member with the course release.
    • For team-taught courses, funding will default to the lead instructor (primary applicant) on the proposal, and will default to the department that is providing that faculty member with the course release.  Compensation will be provided for one instructor only.  For team-taught courses with instructors in different colleges, funds will be split between the colleges.
  • For TAs, funding will default to the department that is providing the faculty member (lead instructor) with the course release. For team-taught courses with instructors in different colleges, funds will be split between the colleges.
  • Alternative arrangements or agreements between departments and other academic units, including with other colleges/schools, will be implemented at the departmental level via funding transfers.
  • Allowable Usage of Funds: departments may use Signature Course funds for non-tenured faculty salaries, TA/AI salaries, and Signature Course course expenses. By provost ruling, in no case may these funds be used to enhance any tenure-track or tenured faculty salary directly.

COMPENSATION TO DEPARTMENTS

  • Faculty Replacement Costs: $13,000 per course, assuming the primary instructor has received a full course release to teach the signature course (not as an overload).
  • Special Course Costs: $1,000 per course.  Funding will be reserved in a separate sub-account for special course expenses.  Procedurally, faculty members should submit spending proposals to their department chair for approval. Compensation will be allocated at the discretion of the department chair.  Any unused funds may be reallocated at the discretion of the department chair provided they comply with all funding allocation rules.
  • Teaching Assistant Costs: $8,000 per TA.  TA funds will be provided based on the following enrollments:
    • Ratio 50:1 for non-Writing Flag courses with enrollments of 50+
    • Ratio 30:1 for Writing Flag courses with enrollments of 60+

FUNDING TIMELINE

  • All funding will be distributed to departments via the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office.  Departments will not receive any funds directly from UGS.
  • The Dean’s Office will provide departments with 2014-15 signature course projected allocations in approximately April 2014 as information becomes available from UGS.  These projected allocations will be subject to change pending final enrollments and course changes.
  • Fund transfers for 2014-15 signature courses will take place on approximately September 1, 2014.  Departments will be informed when funds are transferred.
