Battalion Dining In

The Longhorn Battalion held a Dining In on November 17th. The event was a chance for the cadets to socialize and build some camaraderie as well as become familiar with a long standing Army tradition. Mr Vice was Cadet Lewis, who throughly enjoyed sending violators of protocol to the "Grog" bowl. The guest speaker was Colonel (Ret) Novier from San Antonio.

Veterans day Ceremony

The Longhorn Battalion participated in a joint ROTC Veterans' Day ceremony on November 10th. The ceremony, which was held at the LBJ Library, has become a tradition within the ROTC department as a tribute to the soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines who have served this country.

Fall FTX a success

The Fall Field training exercise was a success this year. The excercise was held a camp Bullis in San Antonio and training included the Field Leaders Reaction Course, a land navigation course, an obstacle course and the rappel tower.

Intramural Football team makes playoffs

The AROTC intramural football team had a successful season this year. They went 3-2 for the season which was 3 more victories than the team had last season and was good enough to get them into the playoffs.

Retired General briefs ethics

An LBJ Ethics professor, retired Brigadier General Howard Prince, visited the Longhorn Battalion and gave a briefing on his experences in the Vietnam war and how ethics play a hugh part in every war.

Cadet's father is guest speaker

COL Jeff Russell, 18th Engineer Brigade commander and father of MS1 Cadet Russell recently was a guest speaker during one of the MSIII classes. Col Russell is currently stationed in Germany.

The Professor of Military Science, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Vizzarri was one of the guest speakers at the Veterans day ceremony at Dripping Springs High school on November 10th. LTC Vizzarri, who has had a combat tour in Afghanistan and Iraq, spoke of duty and sacrifice and thanked the students for thier appreciation and support.

On Saturday November 4 at Russell A. Steindam Hall Lieutenant General Raymond T. Odierno (field artillery) spoke to the cadets of the Longhorn Battalion about leadership, today’s Army, and the war in Iraq. General Odierno is the Commander of the 3rd armored corps (III corps) and Ft. Hood is the largest military installation in the world.

Yoga anyone?

The Longhorn Battalion was treated to a special PT session on October 20th; a yoga session given by UT senior Bonnie Varner. The cadets were put through what we are sure was a very basic yet very enlightening yoga workout. The event was part of the continuing effort to diversify the normal PT routine. It gave the cadets a look at a different way to reach the same goal of staying physically fit.

On August 29th, one day before school started, the Longhorn Battalion conducted its annual orientation. During the orientation new ROTC cadets received an open arm welcome from seniors that included a tour of the facility, free lunch, interactive military training, and a hands-on introduction to combat tactics.

On January 2, 2006, cadets of the Longhorn Battalion participated in the one of our most successful fund raisers, a pie auction. The event raised over 700 dollars for the Goldbar Association, an Army ROTC Club which organizes fundraising events to provide funds for activities that entertain and educate cadets.
