South Asia Institute hosts conference on Spoken Tamil

Fri, April 2, 2010

On March 12th, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan welcomed participants of the National Workshop for Tamil Instructors to Draw Common Strategies in Tamil Curriculum. Nine papers were presented at the conference, focusing on various aspects of spoken Tamil. Eight of the nine presenters came from US institutions, with one presenter coming from abroad. Every paper was well-received and followed by useful question-answer sessions. Discussions focused largely on the issue of which variety of spoken Tamil should be used in classrooms, with significant discussion as well on teaching materials and methodologies.

On the second day, the participants had fruitful long discussions on common strategies for teaching spoken Tamil at all levels (basic to advanced). The main focus of discussion was a scale to determine authentic variety. The participants also discussed task-based core materials that are appropriate for all levels, but particularly for intermediate and advanced spoken Tamil. It was suggested that materials (core, supplementary, and remedial) should be prepared both in print and multimedia formats, and that they should be kept online, as there is currently no material exclusively available for teaching spoken Tamil.
