ACL Majors Awarded Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Scholarship

Wed, June 1, 2011

Asian Cultures and Language majors Di Chen and Leena Warsi have been awarded the extremely prestigious Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Scholarship (UEPS) for 2011. The UEPS program was created in 1973 to make available substantial scholarships for outstanding students at The University of Texas at Austin. Selection is made by a presidentially appointed scholarship committee. The UEPS program is considered one of the most notable scholarship offers for UT students. Students nominated for this honor take heavy academic loads while demonstrating leadership ability and involvement in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. They must be nominated by their academic department in order to be considered for the award.

Di Chen is majoring in both Asian Studies and Asian Cultures and Languages (Chinese) and earning her teaching certification through the UTeach program for LOTE (Languages Other than English). She has recently been admitted to Asian Studies Honors where her research will focus on memoirs written by Chinese authors who experienced the Cultural Revolution as youths and chose to write about their experiences in English.

Leena Warsi holds the unique distinction of being the only student to participate in two separate Language Flagship programs at the same time.

She has just completed her overseas year in India and is preparing to enter her fourth and final year in the Hindi-Urdu Flagship Program. Leena has also studied Arabic in Alexandria, Egypt as part of UT Austin’s Arabic Flagship program.
