Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights

Programs will focus on issues related to the African American and Latino experience in today's society such as educational inequality, health care disparities, and the disproportionate representation in the criminal justice system. Furthermore, programs will examine the interaction between African Americans and Latinos and how these issues are manifested in those relationships.

Symposium Closing Keynote Speaker: Mr. Ron Kirk, the first African American mayor of Dallas, attorney and a UT School of Law alumnus. Mr. Kirk will discuss his experience as mayor and the difficulties he faced in addressing the issues facing Black and Latinos today. In addition, he will reflect specifically on the relationship between African Americans and Latinos and offer solutions to improving those relationships based on your personal experience.
