PLEASE NOTE: The CASA II program has been temporarily suspended due to cuts in funding. The CASA II program will resume, in shaa'allaah, in 2015-2016.

The CASA II program aims to provide further opportunities for CASA fellows who have completed the CASA I program within the past five years, and would like to continue enhancing their language skills and advancing their Arabic-based research in Egypt.

The CASA II program offers the opportunity to study for one or two semesters (Fall, Spring or both) at the American University in Cairo (AUC). The program is meant to be flexible in order to cater to the individual linguistic and research needs of each CASA II fellow. Individual academic programs will be designed in close consultation between the CASA fellow and the CASA Executive Director in Cairo.

Each CASA II fellow enrolls in three tutorials per semester. These tutorials can be in any of the language skills or in the fellow's own field of specialization. In addition, CASA II fellows are welcome to enroll in any of the regular CASA I classes offered during the fall and spring semesters as part of their CASA II program. All fellows are be expected to participate in and contribute to the full range of activities for the CASA program.

To qualify for a CASA II fellowship, the successful applicant must have completed the CASA I Full-Year program within the past five years and must be enrolled in a graduate program related to Arabic and/or Middle Eastern Studies. Former CASA fellows who graduated more than five years ago may apply for a CASA II fellowship, but will be required to take the CASA Entrance Exam in order to assess their current level of proficiency in Arabic.

Each applicant must complete and submit the CASA II application form and provide all supporting documents by January 4, 2013.  For those applicants being considered for a fellowship, a 20 minute oral interview in Arabic will be coordinated to discuss their proposals with the CASA Executive Director. This interview takes place in early March when the CASA Selection Committee convenes for the application process.

What Does the CASA II Fellowship Cover?

Each CASA II fellow will receive the following:

  • Roundtrip airline ticket to/from Cairo, Egypt. Travel is restricted to CASA program dates.
  • Paid tuition for one or two semesters based on fellowship award.
  • A monthly stipend of 3,550 LE (Egyptian Pounds) to help meet living expenses.

The CASA program will handle all travel reservations and issue tickets to fellows upon confirmation. CASA fellows are responsible for arranging and paying for their housing and meals.  Each CASA II fellow is expected to pay a non-refundable program fee of $825 per semester (Consortium rate*) or $1,100 per semester (Non-Consortium rate), in addition to purchasing the CASA Medical Insurance Policy. *Please note that only applicants affiliated with a CASA Consortium School, at the time program fees are due, are eligible for the Consortium rate.

All CASA fellows are required to enroll in the CASA approved medical insurance plan that provides coverage abroad for the entire fellowship period and an extended benefit of coverage in their home country once the fellowship ends. When purchasing the CASA policy, please include a separate check payable to "CASA/UT-AUSTIN" for the appropriate premium amounts for your participation.

Similar to the CASA I program, applicants for CASA II have the option of applying on a Pay-Your-Own-Way basis, if other sources of funding are available.
