Sehjong Hamjong accepts the position of Visiting Program Coordinator for the Asian American Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
During his studies at the University of Texas at Austin, Sehjong Hamjong was an active member of the APA student community. He served as guest panelists and helped organized a number of activities that aided in promoting awareness of APA issues. He has now joined the ranks of higher education administration by accepting the position of Visiting Program Coordinator for the Asian American Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Students to collect Vietnamese American stories
UT class is first offering of Vietnamese American culture and history.
A history major at the University of Texas, Andrew Morris has studied the Vietnam War. He knows the American perspective. He knows that the fallout was severe. But he wants to learn what happened after Saigon fell. Now he has the chance. For the first time, UT is offering a course on Vietnamese American culture and history this semester.

VAHF January Talk Show featuring AAS Course
VAHF's January Talk Show will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2008 from 8-8:30pm on VN Hai Ngoai Radio of Austin
VAHF members are excited to take a roll in "The Vietnamese American Culture and History" class. This course is offered by the Center for Asian American Studies (CAAS) at the University of Texas-Austin. The course is being taught by instructor, Linda Ho Peche.

UT-Affiliate Film Screening: Best of the West
CAAS affiliate, Maryam Kashani, director of Best of the West to be screened during the Austin Asian Film Festival!
This year’s Austin Asian Film Festival will include a UT Screening of Maryam Kashani’s film “Best of the West” on Friday, November 9th at Nuevo Onda Restaurant starting at 7pm.
Film Description: A humorous and poignant documentary chronicling the fast times of Kashani’s father and his male buddies as they emigrated from Iran as teenagers in the 1960s, immersed themselves in San Franscico counterculture, and eventually found success as entrepreneurs. The filmmaker interweaves interviews, images of pre-revolutionary Iran and an oil-hungry America, and a lively sountrack of Iranian music and American RandB, funk, and soul. (70 min, 2006)

VAHF's Talk Show on VNHN

Assistant Instructor, Linda Peche, gave an insightful interview on Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation's (VAHF) Talk show::VNHN Radio Thanksgiving evening. Linda discussed her course topics, what the students will do in the course (conduct oral histories with community members which will hopefully be donated to the Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation archive), and what she hopes they will take away from the course.

Top Young Historians : Madeline Hsu, Ph.D.
Hsu Named One of History News Network's Top Young Historians
The History News Network named Madeline Hsu, associate professor of history and director of the Center for Asian American Studies, one of the nation's "Top Young Historians." Hsu studies migration, transnationalism, and ethnic studies and is the author of "Dreaming of Gold, Dreaming of Home: Transnationalism and Migration Between the United States and South China, 1882-1943," (Stanford University Press, 2000). She is co-editor with Sucheng Chan of "Chinese Americans and the Politics of Race and Culture," (Temple University Press, 2008). She is also the editor of the forthcoming "Transnational Politics and the Press in Chinese American History: Collected Essays of Him Mark Lai."
Hsu is currently working on a monograph exploring the Cold War intersections between American and Chinese foreign policy goals to migration policies and ethnic representations of Taiwanese Chinese in the United States.
