**Haiti Relief Effort**

A campus wide benefit event will be held on Friday at 5 p.m. at Gregory Gym Plaza to raise funds for the relief effort in Haiti. Additional activities will take place throughout the day starting at noon at The John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies (JES A232) and the Malcolm X Lounge (JES A136).

The John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies is now accepting monetary donations to support the relief effort in Haiti. Please contact the Warfield Center at (512) 471-1784 for details.

This Haiti relief effort is supported and sponsored by the  John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies (WCAAAS), the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS), The Tereza Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS), the Multicultural and Information Center (MIC), The Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), the Community Engagement Center (CEC), the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) and various student campus organizations.

Everyone's concern and generous contributions towards this effort are appreciated.

 

Haiti Earthquake Relief Event @ UT-Austin, Friday, January 22, 2010

Program

Noon-5pm = Open house. Location: Malcolm X lounge, Jester

12-12:30pm: Spiritual Mourning Call

2-4pm: Film screening, "The Agronomist" (90 minutes), about the Haitian activist Jean Dominique, directed by Jonathan Demme. Introduction and discussion of the film led by Prof. Frank Guridy (History). Location: UTC Auditorium  2.112A     

5-7pm = Public Rally. Location: Gregory Gym Plaza

5:20 COLA Dean Randy Diehl

5:30 Haitian Song/Artistic Performance (Carole Metellus)

5:45 Lynn Selby (Anthropology PhD student who was in Haiti during the earthquake and was recently evacuated back to the US)

6:00 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Jemima Pierre (Assistant Prof. of Anthropology and Haitian national)

6:15 Poem by Haitian American Hip Hop Artist

6:30 Videoconference with reporter in Port au Prince

6:50 Acknowledgments (BFSA, MIC)

Food will be available at the event 5pm, Kyle Clark will DJ and provide music, and photos of Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti taken by UT journalism MA student Eve Hershaw will be projected on screen during the event.
