Food for Black Thought

Critical discussions of food and the food system are on the rise in academic research, public policy, and in popular media. Food for Black Thought (FFBT) will explore how these issues involve, impact, and engage Black populations from transdisciplinary and community-based perspectives. FFBT will explore Black experiences with food and the food system, past and present, in Austin and beyond.

The 2-day community + action symposium will take place at the Warfield Center for African and African American Studies (UT Austin) and at the George Washington Carver Cultural Center. Facilitators and presenters include youth and adults, from the University of Texas at Austin, the greater Austin community, and from across the United States.

Join us for more than a conference. FFBT is a first step in creating a community coalition focused on food issues affecting Black people. Share your thoughts and join in conversation, listen and expand your knowledge.

Day One:  Friday, September 28, 2012. All events will be held at the Warfield Center for African and African American Studies, Jester A232A, unless otherwise noted.

What’s going on? Black Communities and Food Today /
This interactive “Freedom School” workshop invites you to learn and share about present-day Black food production, consumption, and health. Our conversation will span the United States and the broader African/Black Diaspora.  Facilitators Dr. Kevin Thomas (UT Austin, Advertising) and Naya Jones, MA (UT Austin, Geography) will share empirical insights, latest headlines, information about Black food/farming organizations, and more.

“The Future of Soul Food?”: Lunch/Storytelling with Hoover Alexander
/ A local entrepreneur and community worker from Austin, Hoover is the owner of Hoover’s Soul Cooking and the Soular Food Trailer. Hoover serves on the board of Foodways Texas and recently launched a community garden at a historically Black church in East Austin.


1:15 – 2:15 PM
Roundtable
/ During this dynamic discussion, Dr. Thomas (Advertising), Dr. Elizabeth Englehardt (American Studies), and Dr. Talia McCray (Planning) will grapple with Black foodways, food access, experiences, and more. 

 

2:30 – 3:30 PM
Keynote Talk with Dr. Naa Oyo Kwate
/ Dr. Kwate explores the intersection of race, gender, space, and health. She joins us from Rutgers University, where she is an Associate Professor affiliated with Human Ecology and Africana Studies. Dr. Kwate  directs the research lab for Race, Neighborhoods, and African-American Health (RNA).

“Soul Food Junkies” Documentary Screening with Byron Hurt / Hurt is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, a published writer, and an anti-sexist activist. His documentary Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. A joint effort with the Black Media Council.

Town Hall Meeting
: Community members are invited to share their concerns, experiences, and ideas about food in Austin. Youth and adults will have an opportunity to sign up for further efforts that will address food issues facing Black communities locally and beyond.

 

2:15 PM - 3:15 PM
Keynote Talk with Toni Tipton Martin
/ Chef, culinary historian, and journalist, Toni’s work interrogates caricatures of Black women and food. She is also Founder and Director of the SANDE Youth Project, a Food and Nutrition Consultant, and a Member of Sustainable Policy Food Board in Austin, Texas.

 

3:25 - 4:15 PM
A Conversation: Growing Goodness
: Local gardeners and activists Rose Pulliam and Priscilla Hale share their personal gardening inspiration, experiences, and practical tips. Rose Pulliam is Executive director of allgo, a statewide queer people of color organization based in Austin; she is also completing her PhD in social work at UT Austin. Priscilla has been a social worker and director of development with allgo since 1998.  She was born and raised in Austin.

 

4:30 PM – 4:45 PM

Reading with Stephanie Lang: Program Coordinator at the Center for African and African American Studies, Lang is also a writer, performer, and activist. She is from Austin.

 

4:45 - 6:00 PM

"East Side Food Stories" Documentary Screening with youth directors /  Directors Charles Easley, Kayla Holman, and Isaiah Stewart are a team of Black youth researchers from the East Austin Food Project. In this short film, they share their experiences with food in East Austin and explore what local residents think about food where they live. Co-producers: Monique Walton and Naya Jones.
