Lecture with Social Activist Anderson Sa

Fri, February 2, 2007 • 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM • JES A232

Involved in the favela drug trade in Rio de Janeiro at a young age, Anderson decided to abandon life in the unofficial economy and promote youth empowerment and change via Afro-Brazilian music and culture. As a social activist and member of Grupo Cultural AfroReggae, Anderson is the face of a movement which has changed the lives of thousands of impoverished, mostly Afrodescended children in Brazil.

Anderson's story (and that of AfroReggae) was recently chronicled in the award winning documentary " Favela Rising." Directed by Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary, "Favela Rising" has won over 24 international film festival awards, including Film of the Year (International Documentary Association), Best Emerging Documentary Filmmaker (Tribeca Film Festival), Best Documentary (Sydney International Film Festival), and Outstanding International Documentary (Reel World Film Festival).
