16 November 2012 Advisory Update from CASA Stateside & UT-Austin
Dear CASA Fellows:
Tensions between Israel and Egypt have escalated over the situation in Gaza, and the possibility exists that demonstrations may occur over the weekend. Travelers should be aware of possible protests on 16 November outside the Israeli embassy, located at Sharia Ibn-El Malek in the capital Cairo, to denounce recent Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. The protesters are also demanding that the government close the embassy. Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood organization has called for protests outside mosques across the country on 16 November following Friday afternoon prayers.
International SOS travel advice:
- Avoid all protests and rallies.
- Avoid the vicinity of mosques at the end of Friday afternoon prayers.
- Localized disruption is possible in areas surrounding mosques, especially outside more prominent mosques such as the al-Azhar Mosque along Sheikh Mohammed road in the capital Cairo.
