SIGLO XXI: Economies of Class, Economies of Culture (An IUPLR conference)

April 12-14, 2007

SIGLO XXI: conference of IUPLR Institutions, April 12-14, 2007Background

The INTER-UNIVERSITY PROGRAM FOR LATINO RESEARCH (IUPLR) is a national consortium of university-based centers dedicated to the advancement of the Latino intellectual presence in the United States. IUPLR works to expand the pool of Latino scholars and leaders and increase the availability of policy-relevant Latino-focused research. IUPLR works to strengthen the network of its twenty-three centers, to enhance their institutional capacity and to foster faculty research. The primary purpose of this meeting is to provide opportunities for faculty to share the scholarship that is being generated at their respective centers and institutes.

Conference Title and Theme

In the spring of 2005, the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) at The University of Texas at Austin hosted the first IUPLR Biennial Conference. Due to the success of the 2005 event, CMAS will host the second IUPLR Biennial Conference on April 12-14, 2007 in Austin, Texas.

SIGLO XXI: Economies of Class, Economies of Culture—is broadly intended to suggest that we now live in the twenty-first century when the expanding Latino communities in the United States are faced with class and cultural configurations and issues that are both challenges but also opportunities for the fruitful development of these peoples. We envision a conference that explores both traditional and emergent economies of culture and class, analyses preferably based on substantial empirical, textual or archival data. Presentations at the conference will focus on issues of health, language use, politics, immigration, literature and the arts, history, and popular culture, among others.
