TCEP-CMAS Brown Bag
Thu, March 8, 2012 • 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM • Cissy Parker McDaniel Deans Conference Room (SZB 238), George I. Sánchez Building, The University of Texas at Austin
Dr. Angela Valenzuela and Patricia D. Lopez will discuss the unfolding of the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) system. Central to this plática are the changes made to high school graduation requirements and the state’s construction of “measures of readiness,” or those factors that label students as “college ready.” By merging the co-presenters’ individual and collective research on Texas’ previous systems of testing and with more recent data on the STAAR system, this presentation will highlight the politics of Texas-style accountability—who benefits and the projected consequences for students, their families, and community schools.
Dr. Angela Valenzuela is Associate Vice President in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and Professor in Educational Administration and Curriculum and Instruction. She also directs the Texas Center for Education Policy (TCEP).
Patricia D. Lopez is a doctoral candidate in Educational Policy and Planning with a graduate portfolio in Mexican American Studies. She is also a Research Associate for the Texas Center for Education Policy (TCEP).
