CMAS Plática: Cristina Cabello de Martínez

Wed, December 12, 2012 • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM • Chicano Culture Room (UNB 4.206), Texas Union, The University of Texas at Austin

"Guadalupe, Our Greatest Cultural Legacy"

In this plática, Dr. Cristina Cabello de Martinez will discuss some of the recent authoritative discoveries on the image of Guadalupe and its significance today.

New research on the image of the 481 year old coarse agave tilma of Juan Diego clarifies its pivotal significance as a “Náhuatl Codex."  The words spoken by María of Guadalupe to Juan Diego were clear to him precisely because of the complexity of the apparition that was meant to console the very heart of the indigenous and simultaneously exhort him to action. Thus the tilma becomes profoundly more than an image; it is a codex that reveals, in the Náhuatl language and culture, Flor y Canto, Truth.

Cristina Cabello de Martinez, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Texas at Austin.
