This portfolio plática by Lucy Guevara Vélez employs the Latino cultural citizenship framework to show how Mexican immigrant young adults are using the GED classroom to construct and transform their lives in the United States. The talk, based on a dissertation, examines the educational experiences of Mexican immigrant young adults, their motives for enrolling, the value of the GED, and the impact of the GED program on their lives and on their future aspirations.
Lucy Guevara Vélez is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction with a Graduate Portfolio in Mexican American Studies. The chair of her dissertation committee is Angela Valenzuela, Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of Educational Administration.
