Public Lecture: Miriam Pawel

Fri, April 4, 2014 • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM • Chicano Culture Room (UNB 4.206), Texas Union, The University of Texas at Austin

“Cesar Chavez: The Man, The Myths, and The Legacy"”

Miriam Pawel will discuss her new book The Crusades of Cesar Chavez, a biography of the iconic founder of the United Farm Workers of America. Pawel offers a searching yet empathetic portrayal of Cesar Chavez in this comprehensive biography. Chavez emerges as a visionary whose eyes were fixed on a horizon others often could not even see. Pawel describes Chavez as a brilliant strategist who sometimes stumbled, and a canny, streetwise organizer whose pragmatism was often at odds with his elusive, soaring dreams. Drawing on thousands of documents, hundreds of hours of audiotapes, and scores of interviews, this biography deepens our understanding of one of Chavez’s most salient qualities: his profound humanity.

Miriam Pawel’s earlier work, The Union of Their Dreams - Power, Hope and Struggle in Cesar Chavez's Farm Worker Movement, was hailed as a nuanced, ground-breaking narrative of the movement. Pawel is a Pultizer-prize winning editor who spent 25 years working for Newsday and the Los Angeles Times. She received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to complete this new biography of Cesar Chavez.
