Biography

Professor Madrid's current research focuses on the emergence of ethno-populist parties in the Andean nations. His book-in progess seeks to explain under what circumstances parties based in Latin America's indigenous movements succeed. He also continues to study policy reform in Latin America, especially pension reform. From 2004-2007, he served as Associate Editor for Latin American Research Review, the journal of the Latin American Studies Association. Before entering graduate school, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica and as a foreign affairs analyst in Washington, DC.

The courses he teaches include: Introduction to Latin American politics; U.S.-Latin American Relations, Politics of Development in Latin America; Ethnic Politics; and Latin American Politics: Theoretical Perspectives.

He is the author of Retiring the State: The Politics of Pension Privatization in Latin America and Beyond (Stanford University Press 2003). His articles on economic and social reform and on indigenous political behavior in Latin America have been published by Comparative Politics, Electoral Studies, Journal of Latin American Studies, Latin American Politics and Society, and Latin American Research Review.
